God Punishes Nations for Sin
A biblical worldview encompasses the understanding that God is very involved in world events, much more than most people realize. Scripture teaches that God sometimes punishes rulers and countries when they turn away from His precepts. Typically, He will send warnings to such countries before disaster strikes. Repentance is the key to avoiding national calamity:
“Time after time I sent you prophets, who told you, ‘Turn from your wicked ways, and start doing things right…so that you might live in peace here in the land I have given to you and your ancestors.” But you would not listen to me or obey me.’” (Jeremiah 35:15)
“The Most High rules over the kingdom of mankind.” (Daniel 4:16)
“Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin condemns any people.” (Proverbs 14:34)
“When I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or command locusts to devour the land or send a plague among my people, if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” (2 Chronicles 7:13-14)
“The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness…” (Romans 1:18, note the present tense, “is.”)
Dr. Roger Barrier put it succinctly:
“When a nation rejects God, loses its conscience and acts as if consequences to sin are inconsequential, God turns His back on that nation. He basically says, ‘You have rejected Me so I will reject you. You are on your own. Make the best of it as you rot away from the inside and fall inwardly upon yourselves to utter destruction.’”
- According to Scripture, what may happen to a nation that turns away from God?
- God rewards them for their diversity and inclusion
- God abandons them to their own devices
- God’s judgment is upon them.
- Both A & B
- Both B & C
God’s Word says:
“Likewise, Sodom and Gomorrah and the cities near them, which like them committed sexual sins and pursued homosexual activities, serve as an example of the punishment of eternal fire.” (Jude 1:7)
- According to the Bible, what was Sodom and Gomorrah’s distinctive sin?
- Sexual sin, particularly homosexuality.
- Making war on other nations
- Not being socialist
Mrs. Billy Graham famously said: “If God doesn’t judge America, he owes Sodom and Gomorrah an apology.” Why do you think she said that? (Write your answer below)

Read Jude 1:7 (above) again. It tells us that God’s destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah is:
-
-
-
- An example to other nations.
- An example to all people.
- A warning example to nations that embrace the homosexual lifestyle.
- A warning to homosexuals
- All of the above
-
-
- According to Jude 1:7, what is the punishment for committing sexual sins and pursuing homosexual activities?
- Nothing
- Bad luck
- The punishment of eternal fire
- In view of what happened to Sodom and Gomorrah, do you think when a nation favors and accepts homosexuality as normal, and its leaders even call sodomite unions “marriage,” that it’s people should be concerned about God’s judgment?
- Yes
- No
Note what God said concerning the nation of Judah and its king, Ahaz: “But God was punishing Judah with these disasters, because King Ahaz had disobeyed Him and refused to stop Judah from sinning.” (2 Chronicles 28:19)
- According to the above passage of Holy Scripture, does God sometimes punish a nation for the wicked actions of its leader(s)?
- Yes
- No
- Considering what 2 Chronicles 28:19 says: If political leaders embrace sin, and enshrine sin in their laws, should the citizens be concerned that their country may be punished?
- Yes
- No
Biblical Example – Nineveh
God warns nations before His judgment falls on them. He typically sends a prophet to warn them. God wants them to repent so that he won’t have to bring calamity upon them. In the case of Nineveh, God sent the prophet Jonah to warn them that they would be destroyed for their wicked ways:
Then the word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time: “Get up! Go to the great city of Nineveh and proclaim to it the message that I give you.” This time Jonah got up and went to Nineveh, in accordance with the word of the Lord. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly great city, requiring a three-day journey. On the first day of his journey, Jonah set out into the city and proclaimed, “Forty more days and Nineveh will be overturned!”
And the Ninevites believed God. They proclaimed a fast and dressed in sackcloth, from the greatest of them to the least. When word reached the king of Nineveh…he issued a proclamation in Nineveh:
“By the decree of the king and his nobles: Everyone call out earnestly to God. Let each one turn from his evil ways and from the violence in his hands. Who knows? God may turn and relent; He may turn from His fierce anger, so that we will not perish.”
When God saw their actions—that they had turned from their evil ways—He relented from the disaster He had threatened to bring upon them. (Jonah 3)
- Why was God going to destroy Nineveh?
- Because they were rich
- Because they were not Jews
- Because of their evil ways
- What did God do before destroying Nineveh?
- Sent them the prophet Jonah
- Waited 40 days after Jonah began warning them.
- Both A & B
- Why did God decide not to destroy Nineveh?
- Because they believed Jonah’s message was from God
- Because they repented and turned from their sin
- Both A & B
- What do you think would have happened if they had not believed Jonah and not repented?
- Nothing
- God would have destroyed the city.
Biblical Example – Sodom and Gomorrah
When God determined to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah for its homosexuality, he first sent two angels to the city. These angels appeared as normal men. Lot, who found the angels in the city square, did not at first realize they were powerful angels. He feared for them to be in public with night approaching, for he knew how wicked and dangerous the city was. So he invited these strangers into his home. He was literally entertaining angels unaware. Here is the story:
He prepared a meal for them, baking bread without yeast, and they ate. Before they had gone to bed, all the men from every part of the city of Sodom—both young and old—surrounded the house. They called to Lot, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us so that we can have sex with them.”
Lot went outside to meet them and shut the door behind him and said, “No, my friends. Don’t do this wicked thing…”
“Get out of our way,” they replied. “This fellow came here as a foreigner, and now he wants to play the judge! We’ll treat you worse than them.” They kept bringing pressure on Lot and moved forward to break down the door.
But the men inside reached out and pulled Lot back into the house and shut the door. Then they struck the men who were at the door of the house, young and old, with blindness so that they could not find the door. The two men said to Lot, “Do you have anyone else here—sons-in-law, sons or daughters, or anyone else in the city who belongs to you? Get them out of here, because we are going to destroy this place.
The Bible tells us that Lot was grieved by the sexual immorality around him in the city. 2 Peter 2:8 says of Lot, “for that righteous man, living among them day after day, was tormented in his righteous soul by the lawless deeds he saw and heard.” They men of the city were so sex-crazed they wanted to have sex with the two men (the angels) who visited Lot.
However, the Bible does not mention that his wife was concerned at all about the sin. As they fled the city, the angels warned them not to look back at the city when the fire and brimstone (Sulphur) fell. Lot, disgusted with the city of sin, obeyed God and kept fleeing without taking time to behold the fearful and awful destruction.
Lot’s wife disobeyed. God had said, “Don’t look back, and don’t stop anywhere in the plain! Flee to the mountains or you will be swept away!” She, lingering behind her husband, looked back to watch the destruction, contrary to the express command of the Lord. Consequently, she was caught up in the sweeping tempest. Her hesitation is indicative of a dalliance with the carnality of the city. That was more important to her than the command of God.
The dashing spray of the salty and sulphureous rain encrusted her entire body and suffocated her. The Bible describes her as a “pillar of salt,” pillar meaning “something that stands as a monument.” Lot’s wife was not a homosexual, but she did not really mind the homosexuality of the city. She accepted it. She was tolerant and inclusive. Lot’s wife, being turned into a pillar of salt, became a monument to what can happen to people who identify with the world instead of fearing the Lord and respecting His laws.
Concern over a nation turning towards homosexuality and transgenderism is not “homophobic.” The term “homophobic” means “an irrational fear of homosexuals.” Fear of God’s judgment for a nation turning to sexual deviancy is not irrational at all. It is founded in the history of what God did to Sodom and Gomorrah. If the Sodomites would have had a healthy fear of homosexual behavior, and had turned from their sin, God would not have destroyed them.
Biblical Example – Canaanite Nations and Israel
The Bible says that God drove the nations out of the land of Israel so it would be a home to the Jews. God explains that these nations were expelled because of their sexual sin. The Bible consistently outlines that sex is only to be between a married man and woman. Leviticus Chapter 18 is entirely devoted to outlining God’s laws on sexuality. I recommend reading that chapter. God condemns certain sexual acts as an abomination before Him. These acts are:
- Incest (sex with close relatives)
- Adultery (sex with someone else’s wife or someone not your wife)
- Bestiality (sex with animals)
- Homosexuality (sex between two men or sex between two women)
- Infanticide (murdering babies or children. Babies are the fruit of sex in a marriage, thus this is listed in this chapter about sex. Infanticide/Abortion was condemned by God. At that time evil nations did this by sacrificing the babies or children to the false god Molek by burning them in the glowing hot arms of the idol that was heated by fire. This is done more clinically today by abortion, but it is still infanticide. Then, worshippers of Molek would beat drums to drown out the screams. Today the silent scream can be seen in ultrasounds done during an abortion, but these are hushed up by the pounding drums of today’s pro-choice denials that the baby feels pain.)
All of these sins are listed in Leviticus Chapter 18 as things that are detestable abominations in God’s eyes. God says that all the nations who lived in Canaan before the people of Israel arrived practiced all this wickedness. God says the reason He drove them out of the land and called for their extermination was because of these sexual sins, which included homosexuality. (Incidentally, Genesis 15:16 says that God gave them time to repent, but they would not.)
God warned Israel to be careful not to commit the sexual sins that all the nations in Canaan had committed, or they too would be overthrown (They eventually failed to obey this order and thus the Jews were exiled from their land.) After listing all these sexual sins in chapter 18, God says:
Do not defile yourselves with any of these things [sexual immorality]; for by all these the nations are defiled, which I am casting out before you. For the land is defiled; therefore I visit the punishment of its iniquity upon it, and the land vomits out its inhabitants. (Leviticus 18:25 NKJV)
You must not do any of these detestable things, for all these things were done by the people who lived in the land before you, and the land became defiled. And if you defile the land, it will vomit you out as it vomited out the nations that were before you. (Leviticus 18:26-28)
The lesson learned is that sexual perversion can destroy a nation. In Jeremiah 18:7-10 God warns what can happen to nations that do not repent:
If at any time I announce that a nation or kingdom is to be uprooted, torn down and destroyed, and if that nation I warned repents of its evil, then I will relent and not inflict on it the disaster I had planned. And if at another time I announce that a nation or kingdom is to be built up and planted, and if it does evil in my sight and does not obey me, then I will reconsider the good I had intended to do for it.
Any nation that embraces homosexuality by enshrining that perversion in its marriage laws is daring God to punish them. Homosexuality had a big part in the fall of the Grecian and Roman empires. Rest assured, there are other nations that will fall because of sexual perversions.
God is now using the prophets of Christendom to warn nations to repent. Homosexuality is not the only sin that the Canaanite nations (and Sodom and Gomorrah) were guilty of, but the Scripture points out that sexual perversion was the pinnacle of their wickedness. Likewise, we are told in Romans Chapter 1 that when a nation turns away from God’s truth, the spread of homosexuality is the result:
They neither glorified Him as God nor gave thanks to Him, but they became futile in their thinking and darkened in their foolish hearts. Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools…For this reason God gave them over to dishonorable passions. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. Likewise, the men abandoned natural relations with women and burned with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error. (Romans 1:26-27)
Right there we have the explanation of what causes the proliferation of homosexuality in a nation. It is caused by the people turning away from God. It is actually part of God’s punishment upon a nation. And the cure is right there as well: If any nation turns back to toward God, the people will be healed of their perversions. Homosexuality in a nation is a curse for turning away from God, but it is also a merciful warning. Take notice: homosexual proliferation is a warning from God; if the nation does not repent, judgment will fall.
Biblical Example – The Flood of Noah
“He did not spare the ancient world when he brought the flood on its ungodly people, but protected Noah, a preacher of righteousness, and seven others.” (2 Peter 2:5)
Before God destroyed the entire world with a flood, he sent Noah, who the Bible says was “a preacher of righteousness.’ If anyone had listened to him and believed, they would have been able to go in the Ark and be saved. But no one listened. God always sends a warning, but people do not always listen. Just before the destruction of the world by water, the Bible tells us there was some strange sexual perversion going on just prior to the flood. This is a pattern: Whenever sexual perversion is on the rise, judgment is not far off. Just before the flood, some women of earth began having sex with fallen angels. I know, that sounds bizarre, but you can read about it in Genesis Chapter 6 and Jude 1:6. Also see my article here: https://christiananswerman.com/nephilim-giants/
Today’s Warning
God is warning government leaders and all the people today, just as He has done in the past. God is judging the nations and worse calamities will fall if people and leaders do not repent. God’s judgment will fall on presidents, prime ministers, and all politicians who take part in promoting and approving wickedness. From the least to the greatest, people will suffer in any nation that ignores God’s laws.
God is using Christian prophets, ministers, and born-again believers around the world and they are giving warning that God’s judgment will fall if repentance does not happen. Repentance is needed, not just for homosexuals, but repentance from all who have turned away from God. Repentance for all sin, from everyone. Homosexuality is just a symptom of a deeper spiritual problem. No fear of God in the land is the root. When a people become holy and righteous and walk in obedience to God, homosexuality will fade away, and even the few who still engage in it will feel too ashamed to promote their wickedness in public. But when political leaders enthrone perversion into law, and the people are all right with that, then God’s judgment is at hand.
People can be like Nineveh and repent and be delivered, or they can be like the people of Sodom who lashed out in anger against those sent by God and were destroyed.
Jonathan Cahn is a prophet God called to give warning, particularly to America.

Respect for Marriage Act
Jonathan is referring in this video to Biden signing into law the so-called Respect for Marriage act, which would be more aptly named the “Support Sexual Perversion, or Else” act. The act codifies into federal law that marriage can be between a man and a man or a woman and a woman. In other words, it makes sodomy the law of the land. The very sin for which Sodom was destroyed and which contributed to the destruction of the nations in Canaan.
The law also forces Christians to participate in homosexual “marriages.” For example, website designers must make websites for homosexual marriage ceremonies, which may include pornographic content of homosexual behavior. If they don’t, they can be sued or prosecuted. It forces Christian photographers and bakers to participate in homosexual weddings. No born-again Christian would make a cake with miniature figurines of two men kissing. Any true Christian would refuse to participate in any way in a homosexual union, for not to refuse would be to disobey God and incur His judgment for being part of such an abominable event. But now Christians will be subject to suit and prosecution if they obey God and refuse, which could run them out of business and possibly land them in jail, which has already happened in many places.
Church and other religious institutions can be persecuted under this act. Rev. Franklin Graham says, “this bill strikes a blow at religious freedom for ministries and individuals.” Rev Graham went on to say:
“The deceitfully named Respect for Marriage Act…strikes a blow at religious freedom for individuals and ministries and is really the “Destruction of Marriage Act.” Its sponsors remarkably claim it protects religious freedom. It does not. This disastrous bill sends a message to America that if you don’t agree with the left’s definition of marriage, you are a bigot.” – Rev Franklin Graham
This bill will result in litigation against Christian institutions and individuals trying to live according to their sincerely held religious beliefs and moral convictions. It threatens the tax-exempt status of churches and other faith-based non-profits. It makes individuals who refuse to participate in same-sex marriages vulnerable to lawsuits. It forces wedding vendors to help with a same-sex marriage ceremony, even if doing so goes against their deeply held religious beliefs. This is decidedly unamerican.
Christian churches can now be forced to rent out their facilities to homosexuals who want to have their weddings there, for the bill makes it possible to sue a religious institution for discrimination against same-sex couples. Additionally, the IRS could potentially use the bill to remove tax-exempt status from religious organizations.
The purpose of the bill is to allow discriminatory action against someone because of their belief that marriage is between only one man and one woman. The Respect for Marriage Act leaves anyone who doesn’t support same-sex marriage vulnerable. Anyone who wants to hold a traditional view of marriage is going to come under fire.
The bill should be called the Desecration of Marriage Act. Marriage between a man and woman builds society, creates children, and provides far-reaching benefits. A mother and a father are both essential for raising children. Without families headed by a mother and father, our society ceases to exist. Study after study confirms that children do best when they have an intact nuclear family, their mother and father, raising them. This act destroys families, which in turn destroys a country. This law enshrines the sin of homosexuality and it will bring God’s judgment, of which God’s prophets and ministers are now giving warning.
Conclusion
We have seen that the Bible teaches that God judges the nations. Whether they rise or fall is in His hand. We see from biblical history that God has destroyed cities, nations, and once the entire world, for sin, particularly sexual sin. Homosexuality is a blight that comes upon a nation that turns its back on God. The fact that the whole world seems to be doing it does not mean it is right. It only means that much of the world has turned away from God and is playing with fire by disregarding God’s sacrament of Holy Matrimony. God declares in Romans Chapter One that homosexuality spreading in a nation is a sin that is a marker of a degenerate people.
God is sending prophets to proclaim the danger of all sin, and particularly this sin that God calls “detestable” and an “abomination.” While some are hearing and giving heed and repenting, many more are rejecting the truth and bringing further condemnation upon themselves. Any nation that continues down this path is heading for very dark times indeed. In fact, we are already seeing this in America – our economy is suffering, crime is increasing, our enemies are preparing for war with us. The entire world was just swept with a pandemic. One has to be spiritually blind not to see that God is warning the world.
God destroyed the entire world in a flood because of wickedness. The Bible says He will one day destroy the world again for wickedness. It is coming and here is the description of the event:
“The Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with his mighty angels in flaming fire, inflicting vengeance on those who do not know God and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. They will suffer the punishment of eternal destruction.” (2 Timothy 1:7-9)
The only hope is to repent of all sin and turn to God. He says that if people will “humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then…I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” (2 Chronicles 7:13-14)
A Final Word
There is a myriad of different reasons why a person may get caught up into the Homo/Trans frenzy. The devil wants people to think they are born that way, they are that way forever, and nothing can be done but to mutilate their genitals.
But that is not true. Look, there were former homosexuals in the Corinthian Church:
Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.” (1 Corinthians 6:9-11)
Do you see what this says about the people in the Corinthian Church? Some were former adulterers, idolaters, homosexuals, thieves, drunkards, and swindlers, for Paul says, “such were some of you.” And he goes on to say, “But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.” You see, homosexuality, according to God’s word, is not a physical problem. It is a spiritual problem. And God is the answer for all spiritual problems. Homosexuals, adulterers, and anyone can be washed, sanctified, and justified through the name of Jesus.
God wants people to know that if they repent and come to God through Jesus Christ, they can be miraculously healed and transformed.
