What Has Been, Shall Be Again

What will happen next? I shall predict. The best way to predict the future is to study the past. As it says in Holy Scripture:
“What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun. Is there anything of which one can say, “Look! This is something new”? It was here already, long ago; it was here before our time.” (Ecclesiastes 1:8 WEB)
History shall repeat itself. So, let us look to history. On December 7th, 1941, Pearl Harbor was attacked. They attacked when we were the weakest, struggling with the hardships of the Depression. The following day my father went to enlist in the military as a chaplain. Our nation was at war, and he was willing to be deployed overseas with our troops.

After taking the eye exam, the man told my dad, “Well, we would have loved to have had you.” His eyesight was too bad to be accepted into the service. We call the people of that time the Greatest Generation,” for they survived epidemics, the Great Depression, and World War II. They courageously saved the world from despotism.
Now, seventy-nine years later, we find ourselves in another crisis. America has faced tough times before. We have had it easy since the end of World War II. We are going to have to get tough and face up to the challenge as our parents and grandparents did.
Let us recount what we are currently facing. For the first time in American history, we did not have a peaceful transition of power after an election. During the election campaign, Obama weaponized the powers of government to begin an illicit operation against Trump, his party’s political rival. Obama oversaw or initiated illegal spying upon Trump’s campaign. After Hillary lost, Obama left his henchmen entrenched in places of power with orders to overthrow our duly elected president at all cost.
The malevolent deep-state, created by Obama and his henchmen, illegally used the FBI, the Justice Department, the courts and the intelligence services to spy upon, falsely accuse, malign and impede President Trump, doing all they could to remove him from power and hinder his efforts to help our country.
Google, Facebook, Twitter, the mass media, and YouTube are complicit in this war against the president. The deep-state’s efforts were symbolically culminated in Nancy Pelosi disrespectfully tearing up the President’s speech on the floor of the house, an unprecedented immature display of disrespect for the office of president.
Then the virus hit. Democrat-leaning “experts” claimed we had to shut down businesses for a couple of weeks, but then they said it had to go on indefinitely, totally wrecking the economy, which the Democrats then blamed Trump for. We know now the entire shutdown was unnecessary. It was engendered by leftists who desired to destroy the Trump presidency by destroying America.
We started opening the economy back up, but states with Democrat governors refused. They want to keep the economy in disarray so they can continue to blame Trump. They know that creating chaos is their only shot at preventing Trump’s reelection in November, and they don’t care who dies or who gets hurt. This is their practice run for the rioting they will engage in when Trump is re-elected in November.
Democrat governors allow pot and liquor stores to operate but arrest people for going to church, even when staying in their cars. They mock Republicans, accusing them of clinging to their Bibles, their religion and their guns. They officially forbade references to God in their campaigns. They hate God because their deeds are evil. They want to continue their murder of babies, their sexual perversions, and their promotion of Marxist socialism as they pursue their mad quest for power.
The unemployment, the poverty, and the frustration of the shutdown turned America into a tinderbox, poised to ignite at the slightest spark. The murder of George Floyd, a black man, by a white police officer, was the spark that set our nation aflame.
Now Democrat governors refuse to use law enforcement to quell the violence. Why? Because they want our cities to burn. They want the mayhem to keep going so they can blame Trump for it, as they are already doing.
We have seen Illegal actions of politicians, the deep-state, virus deaths, economic shutdown, and riots. How bad things will get, we still don’t know. We do know that China allowed the virus to be loosed from Wuhan upon the United States and the world, while they prevented travel from Wuhan to other parts of China. Their plan? Probably to cripple the world to give them a chance to get ahead while the world falls behind. A very evil plot. And all the while they are engaged in a massive military buildup.
Let us recall history again: Just before World War II, when Imperial Japan had designs upon world conquest, what did they do? They began expanding their territory, taking over countries near them, all the while talking peace with the United States.
Observe what China is doing today: China’s military buildup on its artificial islands in the South China Sea is well known. China’s military operations in the south China seas has threatened freedom of maritime navigation in the area. Most recently, despite protests, China has violated its treaty with Hong Kong, taking control of the region by force, forever ending the freedom of that city.
Just like Japan before they attacked us, China is talking peace. Their leader met with President Trump and made sure that it looked like we were going to work out every difference we had with them. Secretly, I believe they have other plans. I am reminded of President Roosevelt’s words, as played by Jon Voight in the movie Pearl Harbor: “We are building refrigerators while our enemies build bombs.” In our case today, we are distracted by our cities burning as a result of the conflict between Republicans and Democrats, while our enemies are preparing to take advantage of our weakness.
I’ll say it again: To know the future, we must know the past. One hundred fifty-nine years ago, the great Civil War tore our country in two. Democrats wanted slavery, but the newly formed Republican party platformed on stopping the spread of slavery into the territories. Abraham Lincoln was elected as the first Republican president. Democrats, who, at that time, were concentrated mostly in the south, were apoplectic. They hated Lincoln with irrational hatred, almost as much as today’s Democrats hate Trump.
The Civil War was not just a war between the North and South. It was a war between Republicans and Democrats. Then, as now, Democrats sided with evil. At the end of the war, just before he was assassinated by a Democrat southern sympathizer, President Lincoln gave his second inaugural address. In contemplation of how terribly the two sides killed each other, Lincoln said,
“Both read the same Bible and pray to the same God, and each invokes His aid against the other…the prayers of both could not be answered…the Almighty has His own purposes.”
What Lincoln said was profound: “The Almighty has His own purposes.” God’s purpose in the civil war was two-fold. God intended that the slaves be freed. Their cries had ascended to heaven, and God was determined to end their terrible suffering. Not until Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation did we have the favor of God and begin to win the war.
God’s second purpose in the Civil War was to bring about revival. “The Lord disciplines those whom He loves.” Whenever a nation turns away from God, disaster is not far off. God’s purpose is to use that disaster to turn the hearts of men back to Him.
It is not common knowledge, but it is so; history records a great revival in the camps of soldiers in both the North and the South during the Civil War. Bible reading and Bible studies were common in the camps. Countless numbers came to Christ. Here is a brief review of the revival as recorded in the Encyclopedia Virginia:
“The soldier revivals tended to be ecumenical and to cross class boundaries. They were often marked by frequent, fervent, and heavily attended religious ceremonies, including preaching services, organized prayer meetings, and “experience meetings,” or gatherings in which individual soldiers took turns sharing with the group how God had brought them to faith in Christ. They were also evidenced by much private Bible reading and small informal prayer meetings among the troops. During the first months of 1864, delegates of the United States Christian Commission, an organization established by Northern churches to minister to the spiritual and material needs of the soldiers, set up a tent in the Vermont Brigade of the Union’s Army of the Potomac. Though the tent could hold two hundred men, it hosted overflow crowds at nightly meetings, with many men unable to get close enough to hear the preaching. Services lasted an hour and a half, with a short sermon followed by a lengthy experience meeting in which many soldiers took part. Similar meetings were taking place throughout the Army of the Potomac that winter, as well as in the camps of the Army of Northern Virginia.”
Indeed, the Almighty has his own purposes. God’s mission in the Civil War was to free the slaves and to let the terrible bloodshed turn people back to Him. The purpose of God’s “terrible swift sword” was to bring men to repentance.
Make no mistake; we are now seeing the beginning of another civil war. It has started. It is a war between Republicans and Democrats, just the same as it was in 1861, except that most Democrat leaders today don’t read the Bible; they ridicule those who do.
I fear that things may get worse. Once again, God’s terrible swift sword may be unleashed to turn America back to God. Jesus says to America as he said to Jerusalem:
“How often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!” (Matthew 23:37)
Abraham Lincoln in his Lyceum Address said:
“At what point shall we expect the approach of danger? By what means shall we fortify against it? — Shall we expect some transatlantic military giant, to step the ocean, and crush us at a blow? Never! — All the armies of Europe…could not by force, take a drink from the Ohio…At what point then is the approach of danger to be expected? I answer, if it ever reach us, it must spring up amongst us. It cannot come from abroad. If destruction be our lot, we must ourselves be its author and finisher. As a nation of freemen, we must live through all time, or die by suicide.“
Alas, it has “sprung up amongst us.” I pray we are not attacked from without while we are consumed by turmoil within. I predict a foreign attack, yet I pray that I am wrong. What are we to do? Perhaps it is not too late. God allows great evil so that greater good may come from it. If only we would seek that greater good first, then perhaps the evil will be held back by the hand of God. If God’s purpose is that we turn to him, let America do that now, while there is still time.
There is great evil afoot. Demonic powers have been loosed. Wicked principalities and powers in the spiritual realm around us are on the move. We must see the danger before it is too late. We are caught in a great struggle between good and evil. We must pray. The Church must come out of its bubble and begin bold ministry, on the streets, at work, at home, with our neighbors – everywhere. People may not listen now. They will when they are overcome by the evil that has been loosed. It was so in the first civil war. We must pray people listen now so that further evil is aborted.
We have had relative peace for so long that American has forgotten that it takes courageous godly men to hold onto freedom. We have abandoned our schools to godless liberal socialists who have trained up an army of haters who are busy destroying our country. We have allowed it. God has allowed it because we kicked him out of our schools. Now, these malcontents have grown up, become Democrats, and they are trying to take over by force.
Hard times aren’t just coming; they are here. Let us draw near to God that he may draw near to us in this time of trouble. We must pray that the Democrats are voted out of power in November. They had to be defeated with bullets during the Civil War. May they be defeated today with votes. I close with the words of President Ronald Reagan:
“Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn’t pass it on to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same, or one day we will spend our sunset years telling our children and our children’s children what it was once like in the United States where men were free.“
