The Danger of Progressive Christianity

Churches infiltrated—and some pastors don’t even want to talk about it. While faithful believers assume their congregations are safe havens for truth, dangerous ideologies are being smuggled in under the guise of compassion and unity. This is progressive Christianity, or cultural Christianity — where, behind the scenes, organizations funded by atheists and leftist activists strategically target churches with the deliberate goal of undermining biblical Christianity by presenting a woke Jesus that approves of sin.

These groups embed individuals within congregations and leadership structures, posing as believers while gradually shifting the church’s stance on critical moral issues—pushing abortion, homosexuality, transgenderism, and socialism as acceptable Christian lifestyles. Ministries such as Liberty Counsel, Family Research Council, and Mission: America continue to expose these threats of cultural Christianity as urgent dangers to biblical faith and morality. This is part of a much broader problem known as progressive Christianity, a belief system with a woke Jesus that has replaced biblical conviction with cultural approval.

What is Progressive Christianity?

Progressive Christianity, also called cultural Christianity, is a modern movement that redefines core doctrines of the faith. It affirms lifestyles the Bible condemns, rejects the authority of Scripture, and reinterprets God’s love as unconditional acceptance. Rather than calling sinners to repentance, it encourages them to remain in their sin while feeling spiritually affirmed. The teachings of progressive Christianity appeal to emotion, cultural trends, and social movements rather than the unchanging truth of God’s Word. Many progressive, woke churches that present a woke Jesus now openly display the rainbow flag—boldly signaling their approval of sexual perversion that Scripture clearly condemns.

What Is the Deconstruction Movement?

The deconstruction movement is a growing trend in which individuals—often raised in the church—begin to critically examine, question, and often dismantle their Christian beliefs. While some present it as a healthy spiritual journey, it frequently leads to the rejection of biblical authority, the denial of essential doctrines such as the atonement and the resurrection, and the embrace of moral relativism. It is often driven by cultural pressure and the desire to justify sin, and is fueled by online communities and influencers. Though disguised as intellectual honesty or spiritual authenticity, deconstruction often results in apostasy and rebellion against God’s Word.

J29 Coalition and the Deconstruction Agenda

A modern example of this infiltration is the J29 Coalition—the so-called “faith initiative” of the American Values Coalition. Despite the name invoking Jeremiah 29 and “American values,” this group is not grounded in a biblical worldview. In fact, it is funded by a pro-atheist organization. Their stated goal is to “disciple” theologically conservative pastors—not to lead them in biblical truth, but to reframe evangelical political thinking.

This curriculum, paid for by people who openly reject the Christian faith, is being introduced into churches with the express purpose of reshaping how Christians think and talk about sin and politics. It is a direct attempt to alter the biblical convictions of pastors and congregations, while disguising itself in Christian language. It attempts to replace the biblical Jesus with a woke Jesus that is soft on sin. Tragically, many church leaders refuse to even examine the evidence, dismissing it as divisive or unkind—yet the infiltration is real, and the damage is already underway. The deconstruction movement is tightly connected to this strategy. Though it presents itself as a personal journey of spiritual growth, it often leads to the rejection of biblical authority and core Christian doctrine.

Progressive Christianity, Cultural Christianity, and Apostasy

A growing number of churches and Christian institutions are being seduced by secular ideologies that are contrary to the Word of God. Christian colleges, such as Baylor University, which once stood firm on biblical truth, have compromised by accepting funding to promote LGBTQ agendas—particularly in their School of Social Work curriculum, an academic division within the university designed to train students to become social workers.

These colleges are not secular institutions; they are Christian in name, yet they are increasingly embracing sexual perversion under the guise of compassion and inclusion. This trend reflects the broader danger of cultural Christianity or progressive Christianity — a shallow, man-centered version of faith that values acceptance over holiness and feelings over obedience. Cultural Christianity creates the perfect environment for progressive theology to thrive and leads directly to apostasy.

Woke Jesus: A False Gospel

One of the most concerning results of progressive Christianity is the rise of the so-called ‘Woke Jesus’—a distorted version of Christ who affirms sin, avoids truth, and conforms to culture. This false Christ is championed in popular media and even from some pulpits, promoting a gospel of self-expression rather than self-denial. But the true Jesus called sinners to repentance, warned of judgment, and upheld every word of Scripture. Woke Jesus is a counterfeit—and it is deceiving many.

The Church Must Respond with Boldness

The Bible is clear in its teaching about sexuality. Romans 1:26–27 describes same-sex relations as shameful and contrary to nature. 1 Corinthians 6:9–10 says that those who practice homosexuality will not inherit the kingdom of God. This is a serious matter, for Revelation 21:8 says the “sexually immoral…shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone.” Regarding transgenderism, Scripture consistently affirms that God created humanity male and female (Genesis 1:27), and Jesus reinforced this truth in Matthew 19:4. Transgender ideology denies this created order and is therefore in rebellion against God’s design.

Many churches today fail to teach a biblical worldview, and this has led to a rise in apostasy. For too long, too many pastors have said, “We’ll just preach Jesus,” while neglecting to call sinners to repentance—an essential part of the call to Christ. Entire congregations, which claim to be Christian, now affirm abortion, socialism, transgenderism, and sexual immorality. Salvation begins with repentance (Acts 3:19), but people cannot repent if they are never told what behavior is sinful. Calling out sin is not hatred—it is love, because it points people to the Savior who died to redeem them. The real Jesus calls sinners to genuine repentance, while the imaginary woke Jesus offers false comfort by affirming whatever feels good. Romans 12:2 says, “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” Cultural Christianity conforms to the world instead of allowing the heart and soul to be transformed by Christ.

Harsh rhetoric toward the unsaved is not the answer—but neither is silence or compromise. Empowered by the Holy Spirit, believers are called to confront sin with both courage and compassion, speaking the truth in love. Choosing not to warn the lost about what will send them to hell isn’t love—it’s cruel indifference.

Peter, in his sermon on Pentecost, pleaded with the people, “Save yourselves from this corrupt generation!” John the Baptist told Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife!” And when the woman caught in adultery called Jesus “Lord,” He told her, “Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more.”

In these passages, we see that sin is not coddled but confronted—yet forgiveness is readily available to those who will repent and turn from their sin. Likewise, the Church must boldly stand against sin while faithfully proclaiming the Gospel of forgiveness through repentance and faith in Christ. The early Church endured persecution for opposing idolatry and confronting sin, yet they did not waver. Christians today—especially pastors—must show the same courage and conviction, refusing to compromise biblical truth for cultural approval.

Scripture warns us to guard the truth of the gospel. Jesus said, “Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves” (Matthew 7:15). Paul wrote, “I urge you, brothers and sisters, to watch out for those who cause divisions and put obstacles in your way that are contrary to the teaching you have learned. Keep away from them” (Romans 16:17).

Naming names is not harsh—it is biblical. Paul identified false teachers like Hymenaeus and Alexander (1 Timothy 1:20), and John warned about Diotrephes (3 John 9–10). Some pastors today treat their churches like businesses. Their goal is not to make disciples, but to attract crowds. They fear offending people more than offending God.

Biblical truth is watered down, sin is redefined, and the gospel is reduced to a message of self-help and positivity. But the church was never called to be popular—it was called to be righteous and faithful. There is hope. Many young people are returning to church, and Bible sales are on the rise. But revival will not come through compromise. It will come through truth.

The church must proclaim the gospel faithfully, uphold the authority of Scripture, and train believers to live and think biblically. The Church must call people to biblical Christianity—not to a cultural Christianity that has compromised with the world. This is our calling, and we must not shrink back. We must love the sinner while hating the sin, not affirming it. We must remember that Jesus commended the church at Ephesus with these words: “But this you have, that you hate the deeds of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate.” (Revelation 2:6) Yes, it is true—Jesus hates sin. And if we desire His commendation, we must hate it as well.
