By adding human effort to divine grace, the Catholic Church undermines the sufficiency of Christ’s atonement. What must I do to be saved? Another grave error is Marian worship. Though often softened with terms like veneration, in practice Catholics pray to Mary, ascribing to her roles the Bible reserves only for Jesus, such as intercessor and advocate. Likewise, the practice of praying to saints assumes that departed believers can hear prayers and act on behalf of the living, a concept completely absent from Scripture.

Purgatory, Indulgences, and the Mass

Other Catholic teachings deepen the divide between church tradition and biblical truth. The doctrine of purgatory tells the faithful that Christ’s death was not sufficient to cleanse them, requiring an additional state of suffering after death. Indulgences, though rebranded, continue the idea that the church can shorten time in purgatory by granting spiritual merits. The Mass, rather than being a simple remembrance of Christ’s sacrifice, is taught to be a re-presentation of that sacrifice, suggesting His one offering was not enough. Each of these teachings detracts from the finished work of the cross.

Catholicism vs Christianity Through History

Since the Reformation, Protestants have consistently pointed out that Catholicism vs Christianity is more than a family dispute between denominations. It is a fundamental conflict over the source of authority. The Reformers upheld sola scriptura, the conviction that the Bible alone is the final authority in faith and practice. Catholicism, by contrast, places equal authority in Scripture, church tradition, and the magisterium. When human tradition is elevated to the same level as God’s Word, error is inevitable, and souls are placed in danger.

The Gospel calls men and women out of darkness and into the marvelous light of God’s grace, yet Catholicism too often obscures that light with layers of tradition.
