This article examines the case of the Donnie Swaggart divorce, remarriage, and return to his first wife, all of which took place while he remained in the pulpit. Beneath the polished image lies a troubling pattern of moral failure, doctrinal error, and refusal to submit to biblical accountability—patterns that reflect both his own choices and the legacy of his father, Jimmy Swaggart.
Donnie Swaggart Divorce Details
While the Swaggart ministry has not publicly disclosed all the details surrounding Donnie Swaggart’s divorce and remarriage, the timeline and available facts raise serious concerns from a biblical standpoint. Donnie divorced his wife Debbie in 2003 and, within a few short months, married another woman, Judy, within that same year. Judy was reportedly a member of the church he co-pastored and had previously been divorced multiple times. This marriage also ended in divorce a few years later, after which Donnie remarried Debbie. Although no formal admission has been made, the unusually short time between the divorce and remarriage, coupled with the fact that Judy was a congregant, strongly suggests that a romantic relationship may have begun before the divorce. If so, this represents a serious moral failure and a clear violation of biblical qualifications for ministry.
Scripture is clear that a pastor must be “blameless, the husband of one wife” (Titus 1:6) and “above reproach” (1 Timothy 3:2). Furthermore, the apostle Paul makes it plain: “If a man cannot manage his own household, how can he take care of the church of God?” (1 Timothy 3:5). Donnie Swaggart’s marital instability and questionable relational decisions, especially while in leadership, should have prompted him to step down from ministry—at least for a season of repentance, restoration, and counseling.
His refusal to do so mirrors the actions of his father, Jimmy Swaggart, whose repeated moral failures involving prostitutes were compounded by his unwillingness to fully submit to church discipline or take sufficient time away from the pulpit. Rather than accepting correction, both father and son have modeled a pattern of image preservation over biblical accountability. While Donnie’s remarriage to Debbie may seem like a positive outcome, it does not negate the earlier compromise. Pastoral ministry is not a reward for charisma or family legacy—it is a sacred trust. When that trust is broken, the response must be one of humility and submission to biblical standards, not deflection or concealment.
Forgiveness and Restoration
As believers, we are called to forgive—but we are also commanded to exercise discernment. Ministries that continually place personalities above principle are dangerous to the Body of Christ. No man, however gifted, is above the authority of God’s Word. Pastoral leadership requires more than public preaching—it demands private integrity, moral consistency, and transparent repentance when one falls. Ministers who fall into sin can certainly be forgiven, and in many cases, after a time of genuine repentance and restoration, they can return to ministry. However, for those in public ministry—especially those broadcasting to a global audience—this restoration must include public confession and repentance.
The apostle Paul teaches that those who sin should be rebuked publicly so that others may fear (1 Timothy 5:20). In the case of Jimmy Swaggart, while he made a televised confession in 1988, he later returned to the same sin and was again caught with prostitutes. Instead of expressing renewed repentance, he arrogantly declared, “God told me it is none of your business.” Such a statement contradicts the spirit of brokenness and humility that marks true repentance. Donnie Swaggart, by refusing to step down during his marital failures and offering no public acknowledgment of wrongdoing, has followed in his father’s footsteps—not only in ministry, but sadly also in defying the biblical process of restoration. Their actions set a deeply troubling example, undermining the credibility of their message and the integrity of the pulpit.
What makes the moral failures of Jimmy and Donnie Swaggart even more serious is that they are compounded by a host of false teachings (along with questionable financial dealings) promoted through their ministry. Jimmy Swaggart Ministries (JSM) claims to possess a unique revelation of “the cross” that the apostles themselves supposedly did not understand. According to their teachings, Jimmy Swaggart , with his proprietary message of the cross, has been personally chosen to lead a global reformation, branding nearly all other churches as satanic or rebellious. They teach that God the Father has a physical body, lives on a planet somewhere in the universe, and that the Holy Spirit also possesses a bodily form. These doctrines—along with assertions that Jimmy and those who follow him are the only ones preaching the true gospel—are not only unbiblical but cult-like in nature. When such serious theological error is combined with unrepentant moral failure and the refusal to submit to correction, it reveals a pattern that is deeply dangerous to the Body of Christ and dishonoring to the gospel.
Those who defend Donnie or Jimmy Swaggart often accuse concerned Christians of being unforgiving or improperly judgmental. But this misses the clear teaching of Scripture. Jesus warned, “By their fruits you will know them” (Matthew 7:16, 20), speaking specifically of false prophets who outwardly appear righteous but lead others astray. Scripture does not forbid exposing such individuals—it commands it. Paul wrote, “Have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them” (Ephesians 5:11). This is not about casting stones or condemning a brother without cause; it is about exercising the spiritual discernment Christ calls every believer to walk in, especially in guarding the flock from false teachers. To evaluate a minister’s life and doctrine by the Word of God is not slander—it is biblical obedience.
