A counterfeit form of Christianity is spreading across the world. It uses Christian language, Christian symbols, and Christian institutions, but it rejects the authority of Scripture and the moral teachings of Christ. This false Christianity does not call sinners to repentance. Instead, it reshapes Christianity to match the spirit of the age. Entire denominations that once preached the Gospel have abandoned biblical authority and replaced it with cultural ideology.
Unfortunately, some sincere believers still attend these churches, assuming they are worshiping in Christian congregations. Yet institutions that openly reject Scripture and bless what God condemns can no longer be considered truly Christian bodies. They have become apostate religious organizations that preserve the outward appearance of Christianity while denying its power. 2 Timothy 3:5 speaks of such people, saying they would be “Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.”
The Bible warned that such a system would arise in the last days. Revelation 17 describes Mystery Babylon, a false religious system that imitates the true faith while corrupting it. This system presents itself as Christianity while promoting doctrines and practices that stand in direct opposition to the Word of God. The apostate churches of our time represent an early form of this religious deception.
The Doctrines of False Christianity
Woke-ism: Modern apostate Christianity is unified less by theology than by ideology. Churches that differ widely in tradition and doctrine have become remarkably consistent in what they now promote. They embrace woke ideology and reinterpret Christianity as a political program built around identity politics and grievance narratives. Sin is redefined as social injustice rather than rebellion against God. Salvation becomes social transformation rather than redemption through the blood of Christ.
Open Borders: Many of these churches actively support open borders and illegal immigration policies. They promote the idea that enforcing national borders is immoral and unchristian. In doing so they ignore the real-world consequences of lawless immigration, including the growth of human trafficking networks and the exploitation of women and children through forced labor and sexual slavery. Compassion is invoked to justify policies that ultimately expose the vulnerable to greater harm.
Socialism is often presented as a Christian moral obligation. Wealth redistribution is described as justice, and private property is treated with suspicion. Scripture is quoted selectively in order to support political programs that expand government power while weakening individual responsibility and national sovereignty.
Anti-Americanism: A strong hostility toward American history and institutions is common. These churches frequently teach that the United States was built primarily on oppression and theft. The claim that America was stolen from Native Americans and Mexico is repeated as unquestioned fact. Patriotism is treated as moral blindness, and national loyalty is portrayed as incompatible with Christian faith.
Lawlessness is often excused in the name of justice. Riots are described as protests. Criminal behavior is blamed on social conditions rather than individual responsibility. Respect for lawful authority is dismissed as oppression.
Sexual Immorality: Sexual morality has been completely redefined. Homosexual behavior is openly celebrated, same-sex marriages are blessed, and transgender ideology is promoted as compatible with Christian faith. Churches that once taught repentance now affirm sexual immorality as a legitimate Christian lifestyle. Approval of sexual sin is one of the main hallmarks of an apostate church.
Antisemitism is also growing within apostate Christianity. Israel is often portrayed as an oppressor while terrorist violence is minimized or excused. The Jewish roots of Christianity are ignored or denied, and hostility toward the modern state of Israel is often presented as a moral obligation.
Churches That Have Abandoned Biblical Authority
These positions are presented as moral progress. In reality they represent a rejection of biblical authority and a return to the moral confusion of pagan religion. Below is a list of churches that have abandoned the authority of Scripture in order to promote, tolerate, or legitimize sexual sin. These bodies either permit openly sexually immoral individuals to serve in ministry or leadership, or at a minimum authorize blessings for same-sex unions or marriages.
Roman Catholic Church
United Methodist Church
The Episcopal Church (USA)
Presbyterian Church (USA)
United Church of Christ (USA)
Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA)
United Church of Canada
Methodist Church of Great Britain
United Reformed Church (UK)
Church of Scotland
Church of England
Church of Norway
Church of Sweden
Scottish Episcopal Church
Church in Wales
Uniting Church in Australia
Baptist Churches affiliated with the Alliance of Baptists
Metropolitan Community Churches (international)
If the leaders of these churches from a century ago could be brought forward in time and shown what is now taught under their denominational banners, they would be horrified. Men who once preached repentance and holiness would scarcely recognize their own institutions. What is now praised as progress would have been understood as rebellion against God and betrayal of the Gospel.
Scripture warned that this collapse would come, not merely in the world, but within the visible church. The Apostle Paul spoke of those who would have a form of godliness while denying its power. Truth would be exchanged for error, and people would no longer endure sound doctrine. Churches that once stood as guardians of truth now lead the effort to redefine sin and silence repentance.
The False Christ of Progressive Christianity
One of the clearest marks of false Christianity is the invention of a false Christ. Progressive Christianity presents a Jesus who never condemns sin and never calls for repentance. This false Christ exists to make people comfortable rather than to save them.
The Jesus of Scripture warned of judgment, confronted sin, and commanded repentance. He affirmed the authority of Scripture and defined marriage as the union of one man and one woman. The apostles taught the same moral standards and warned that those who practice sexual immorality without repentance will not inherit the kingdom of God.
Many modern churches refuse to preach repentance because doing so would offend their audiences. Instead of declaring the full Gospel, they offer encouragement without conviction and acceptance without transformation. People are told they are saved without ever being called to turn from sin. Refusing to warn sinners is not love. It leaves people unprepared for judgment.
Mystery Babylon and the Apostate Church
Revelation describes a false religious system that imitates true Christianity while opposing it. This system retains the outward form of religion but is spiritually corrupt. It is wealthy, influential, and closely tied to political power. It speaks the language of faith while promoting doctrines that contradict the Word of God.
The apostate churches of our time display these characteristics with increasing clarity. They cooperate across denominational lines, unite around political causes, and seek influence within governments and institutions. Their unity is not based on truth but on shared rebellion against biblical authority.
Mystery Babylon represents organized religious deception on a global scale. The growing alliance of apostate churches shows how such a system can emerge. A worldwide false Christianity that rejects Scripture while claiming the name of Christ is no longer a future possibility. It is already taking shape.
Mystery Babylon Speaks
A recent USA Today article provided a clear example of how false Christianity is speaking in the modern world. The article described a public letter signed by hundreds of religious leaders who claimed that America is facing a “crisis of faith and democracy.” Organizations such as Sojourners and activists such as Jim Wallis helped organize the effort, urging Christians to resist government policies, particularly immigration enforcement. The article presented these leaders as moral authorities and representatives of Christian faith.
Many readers will assume that such statements represent genuine Christianity. The language sounds religious, Scripture is quoted, and pastors and bishops are involved. Yet the message reflects a political ideology rather than the Gospel of Christ. There is almost no mention of sin, repentance, salvation, or the new birth. Instead, the focus is on immigration policy, racial diversity, political activism, and government power. A Christianity that speaks constantly about politics but rarely about redemption has already departed from the faith once delivered to the saints.
The signers of the letter condemned immigration enforcement and portrayed national borders as expressions of injustice. Christians were urged to oppose deportations and resist government policy. These claims are presented as moral obligations of faith, yet Scripture recognizes the legitimacy of nations and lawful authority. Governments exist to preserve order and restrain evil. Portraying law enforcement as unchristian encourages the very lawlessness Scripture condemns.
The article also attacked what it called “Christian nationalism,” labeling it a heretical distortion of the Gospel. The phrase “Christian nationalism” has become a political slogan used by progressive religious leaders to discredit Christians who believe biblical morality should influence public life. Under this label, ordinary Christian convictions such as protecting unborn life, preserving marriage between a man and a woman, maintaining national borders, and promoting public morality are portrayed as dangerous threats to democracy, even though Americans believed in these ethics ever since our founding. By attaching the word “nationalism” to biblical Christianity, these activists attempt to make faithful believers appear radical and un-American, even though the moral principles they defend were once widely accepted in American life.
Behind this language is a deeper ideological goal. Many progressive religious leaders teach that America as originally founded was fundamentally unjust and must be remade into a different kind of society. Instead of a nation shaped by biblical morality, they promote a vision built on ideological “diversity,” meaning the equal acceptance of all religions and moral systems, including pagan beliefs and practices that Scripture condemns. Traditional Christianity is expected to surrender its influence in public life and become only one voice among many, while secular and anti-Christian ideas are elevated to positions of authority.
In this system, Christians who attempt to influence public policy according to biblical principles are condemned as dangerous, while those who conform to progressive ideology are praised as compassionate and enlightened. The effect is to silence true Christianity in the political sphere while empowering religious leaders who reinterpret the faith to support cultural revolution. This reversal of moral authority is a clear example of apostate religion presenting error as virtue and faithfulness as extremism.
Many of the denominations represented among the signers of the letter have already abandoned biblical authority and openly promote doctrines that contradict Scripture. Leaders from such bodies are presented as authoritative voices of Christianity, even though their institutions bless sexual immorality and reject clear biblical teaching. Most readers will never recognize the contradiction. They will assume that if a pastor or bishop speaks in the name of Christ, he must represent true Christianity.
This is how Mystery Babylon grows. Apostate churches unite across denominational lines and speak with a single voice on political issues while ignoring the Gospel. They present themselves as defenders of faith and compassion, yet they reshape Christianity into a tool for social and political transformation. Many sincere believers do not realize that this movement represents a false Christianity that imitates the language of faith while leading people away from biblical truth.
A Call to Discernment
Believers must recognize the difference between biblical Christianity and its counterfeit. A church is not truly Christian simply because it uses Christian terminology or maintains historic traditions. Faithfulness to Scripture is the test. Christians are commanded to avoid those who distort the Gospel and to guard the truth entrusted to them. Naming false teachers and apostate institutions is not unkindness. It is obedience to Scripture.
The rise of false Christianity is one of the clearest signs of the times. The choice before believers is becoming increasingly clear. They must stand with the authority of Scripture and the true Gospel, or they will be swept into the growing religious deception that Scripture calls Mystery Babylon.
