What happened to Amelia Earhart? On July 2, 1937, the famous aviator disappeared over the Pacific Ocean while attempting to reach tiny Howland Island. The explanation most people have heard for the Amelia Earhart disappearance is that she could not find the island, ran out of fuel, crashed into the ocean, and disappeared beneath the waves. That remains the most widely accepted explanation, but there are some serious reasons to question whether it is what actually happened.
One of the strangest parts of the Amelia Earhart mystery occurred after she supposedly crashed. For several days following her disappearance, mysterious radio transmissions were reported across the Pacific and even thousands of miles away in North America. Professional radio operators and ordinary shortwave listeners reported hearing signals believed to be coming from Earhart’s aircraft, and some claimed to hear a frightened woman identifying herself as Amelia Earhart and desperately calling for help. The Coast Guard and Navy ultimately logged 120 reports, and later researchers classified 57 reports from the first several days as credible.
Those almost ghostly radio transmissions raise a fascinating question. If Amelia Earhart ran out of fuel and plunged into the deep Pacific, how could transmissions apparently coming from her aircraft continue to be heard for days afterward? Then, just as mysteriously, the transmissions stopped. The possibility that Earhart survived her final flight changes the entire mystery and raises an even greater question: If she didn’t crash into the ocean, where did she go?
The radio transmissions are only the beginning. There is other remarkable evidence concerning the disappearance of Amelia Earhart that calls the conventional explanation into question. Nearly ninety years later, perhaps the greatest mystery is not simply what happened to Amelia Earhart, but whether the evidence needed to solve the mystery has been there all along.
