Nephilim After the Flood

How is it that there were Nephilim after the flood? Were they not all killed in the flood? Did the Nephilim manage to somehow survive the Flood? The Bible tells us in Genesis 6 that fallen angels had intercourse with women on Earth, resulting in the offspring of giants, which the Bible calls Nephilim. In the book of Jude and also in 2 Peter we are informed that God imprisoned these angels for their disobedience:

“Remember too the angels, how some of them were not content to keep the dominion given to them but abandoned their proper home; and God has reserved them for judgement on the great Day, bound beneath the darkness in everlasting chains. Remember Sodom and Gomorrah and the neighboring towns; like the angels, they committed fornication and followed unnatural lusts; and they paid the penalty in eternal fire, an example for all to see.” (Jude 1:6-7 NEB)

“God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and committed them to chains of gloomy darkness to be kept until the judgment…” (2 Peter 2:4)

We know, according to Genesis 7:21, that all the Nephilim in Noah’s day were killed in the flood. Yet, there were Nephilim after the flood, for over nine hundred years later, we find Israel’s spies reporting giants in Canaan. Numbers 13:32–33 says the land “devours its inhabitants,” its people were of great height, and “there we saw the Nephilim (the sons of Anak, who come from the Nephilim), and we seemed to ourselves like grasshoppers.” This ties the Anakim directly to the Nephilim line and places them in Canaan at the moment Israel approached the Promised Land.

Where Did the Canaanite Nephilim Come From?

The question arises, if the flood of Noah killed all the Nephilim, and the fallen angels who created them were cast into hell, then where did the Nephilim in Canaan come from? How is it possible to have Nephilim after the flood? The answer is found in Genesis 6:4:

“The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of man and they bore children to them. These were the mighty men who were of old, the men of renown.”

This tells us clearly that the Nephilim were on the earth before the flood, and after the flood when the sons of God came in to the daughters of man and they bore children to them. From this we can deduce that God did not immediately imprison these fallen angels at the time of the flood. These demon-angels were left to continue their wickedness even after the flood. While the pre-flood Nephilim did not survive the flood, their progenitors – the fallen angels – were able to return to their realm during the flood and return afterwards. Thus, they procreated more Nephilim offspring after the flood, which is why we find them in the promised land centuries later.

There we have our answer. The Pre-flood Nephilim did not survive the flood, they were all drowned. But new ones were born after the flood as the fallen angels continued to engage in sexual relations with women after the flood. And that is how we have Nephilim after the Flood.
